Mayflower High School Governance Structure

Mayflower High School operates as a single academy trust, a charitable company limited by guarantee. This independent legal entity has a funding agreement with the Secretary of State, guided by the trust’s Articles of Association, which can be accessed in the Policies and Documentation section of our website.

Our academy trustees hold dual roles as both charity trustees and company directors. They are responsible for managing the academy’s business, serving as the official employer of staff, and overseeing the appointments and performance management of key leaders, including the headteacher and deputy headteachers.

Governance with a Strong Focus

The Board of Trustees at Mayflower High School is dedicated to three core functions of governance:

Vision and Strategy

Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos, and strategic direction for the academy.

Accountability

Holding the executive leadership team accountable for the educational performance of the school and its students, as well as for staff performance management.

Financial Oversight

Overseeing the school’s financial performance, ensuring that resources are spent efficiently and to the greatest benefit of our students.

In addition to these functions, trustees ensure that the academy trust complies with charity law, company law, and its charitable objectives. They approve the school’s annual accounts and ensure the funding agreement with the Secretary of State is adhered to. Trustees also monitor the impact of core budgets, catch-up funding, and Pupil Premium on student outcomes, ensuring funds are used effectively.

Strategic Leadership and Monitoring

Trustees at Mayflower High School provide strategic leadership, offering critical oversight to school leaders. They play a key role in reviewing the school’s risks, plans, and overall performance, helping to ensure all students receive a high-quality education, regardless of circumstance. Trustees fulfil their duties through formal board and committee meetings, along with regular school visits to stay informed and engaged with the school’s ongoing work.

Raising Concerns and Complaints

We understand that members of our school community may have concerns from time to time. The Contact Us section of our website offers direct access to the appropriate staff members. If your concern remains unresolved, a senior member of staff can review the matter.

It is important to note that trustees do not get involved in day-to-day operational concerns but instead manage formal complaints through the school’s Complaints Policy, also found in the Policies and Documentation section.
