At Mayflower High School, high-quality teaching and learning are our highest priorities. Our vision—Success, Happiness, and Opportunity for All—drives everything we do.

We believe every student can achieve exceptional outcomes, regardless of their starting point. Guided by a set of well-researched educational principles, we focus on developing knowledge, skills, and vocabulary alongside fostering creative and imaginative thinking. We aim to empower students to work effectively within a team while nurturing their unique individuality.

Our goal is not only to impart knowledge and skills but also to instil ethical values and a strong social consciousness. We prepare students to enter the wider world as responsible citizens, contributing to modern-day Britain. Our teachers foster curiosity and encourage a passion for lifelong learning, inspiring students to push beyond the confines of the classroom and become active seekers of knowledge.

Teaching and Learning Priorities

At Mayflower High School, we adhere to six fundamental principles that shape our teaching approach:

+1 (800) 555 555

Greet

Establish effective routines by welcoming students into a positive learning environment.

Retrieve

Reinforce knowledge and skills to embed learning into long-term memory.

Adapt

Tailor teaching to meet the diverse needs of all students.

Question

Use targeted questioning to assess depth of understanding and challenge students to think critically.

Share

Clearly define success through effective modelling and communicate criteria for achievement.

Practice

Provide regular opportunities for students to refine and practise their knowledge and skills.

Embedding a Knowledge-Rich, Skills-Based Curriculum

We ensure our students engage in regular review of prior material, deep questioning, effective modelling, and sequencing of new concepts. We prioritise independent practice to consolidate learning and foster confidence in applying new knowledge and skills.

Disciplinary Literacy

We also embed research from the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) and educational experts like Alex Quigley and Geoffrey Mortimore across all subject areas. This means our students are exposed to both subject-specific literacy (disciplinary literacy) and examination-focused vocabulary, preparing them to excel in their studies and beyond.

Adaptive Teaching

Finally, we are committed to adaptive teaching—responding to the strengths and needs of every student. With high expectations for all, we adopt the philosophy of “teaching to the top” and then “scaffolding up” to ensure every student is supported to achieve their full potential. By setting aspirational targets and providing the right support, we help every student thrive academically.

Homework

At Mayflower High School, we view homework as a vital extension of classroom learning and an integral part of each student’s education. Research consistently shows that parental interest and involvement in their child’s learning has the most significant impact on helping students fulfil their potential. We encourage a strong partnership between home and school to support our students’ academic success.

To assist you, we’ve provided key information and guidance that will help you and your child engage with homework more effectively.
